In this early pic from our indoor garden/greenhouse, our friendly garden gnome helps use to recognize a few helpful concepts of home-scale permaculture.
1. Produce things that are edible/useful for human needs and tastes, such as tomatoes.
2. Even if we’re working with pots, and not directly in the soil, we still want to promote the fertility of the soil using natural methods. Above we are using vegetable mulches, such as carrot peelings and used tea (yerba máte). Just because it is small space doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be treated like real earth.
3. What we buy at the store goes into our kitchen. What goes out of the kitchen goes into the garden – either into the compost bin, or better yet, directly to the soil.
4. Incorporate personal/family/community aesthetics into the design so that you have fun and enjoy all of your interactions with the garden.
